Rare desert berry could transform diabetes treatment
Five W’s
Summary
Researchers have discovered that a rare desert berry, Nitraria roborowskii, could help treat diabetes. Scientists from Qinghai University and the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology did a study. An extract of the berry called NRK-C was given to diabetic mice for seven weeks. The results were that the treated mice reduced fasting blood glucose levels by 30–40% and their insulin sensitivity improved by about 50%.
My Opinion
Reading this made me feel really hopeful, because if this berry actually works for people, it could make life a lot easier for anyone dealing with diabetes. The results in the mice were shocking, the article says the treated mice had “a 30–40% reduction in fasting blood glucose” and that their insulin sensitivity improved “by roughly 50%.” That’s huge. At the same time, I understand that mice aren’t humans, and even the article warns that “human trials are still needed,” so I’m trying not to get too excited yet. But if this ends up working for people the same way it worked for mice, it could honestly change lives, especially for people looking for safer or more natural treatment options. I really hope they continue this research and actually test it on humans next.
